Description

1881-S Dollar, MS68+
Ultimate Candidate for Type or Set Registry

1881-S $1 MS68+ PCGS. CAC. Plus-graded by PCGS with CAC endorsement, this high-end MS68+ Morgan dollar represents a superlative type coin as well as nearly unimprovable quality for any high-grade silver dollar collection. A translucent golden hue exists on both sides of this otherwise brilliant San Francisco masterpiece, with Liberty's cheek and neck wholly unmarked and a ringing-sharp strike. The thin overlay of golden patina confirms the obvious: This piece is entirely original.

The surfaces are partially (mostly) prooflike, particularly the obverse, which gleams flashy cartwheel luster across virtually pristine fields and devices. A tiny mark beneath the eagle's right (facing) wing is the sole sign of contact, but it poses little distraction -- other than seeming entirely out of place on this nearly flawless coin. Population: 18 in 68+, 2 finer. CAC: 140 in 68, 1 finer (4/19).(Registry values: P1, N1793)
