    1887 Silver Dollar, MS68
Tied for Finest Known at Either Service

1887 $1 MS68 NGC. With a mintage of more than 20 million coins, the 1887 Morgan silver dollar ranks among the most-available dates in the series. Numerous bags were stored in the Treasury department for many years, prior to the massive release of silver dollars that took place more than four decades ago in the early 1960s.

Despite a huge mintage and the long-term storage of many thousands of coins, only three pieces are awarded the lofty MS68 grade -- one by PCGS, and two coins by NGC. This sensational Superb Gem displays frosty luster, with brilliant silver surfaces and traces of peripheral gold toning on each side. A sharp strike delivers suitable definition to the design features, and reinforces the high numeric grade. Census: 2 in 68 (1 in 68 ), 0 finer (11/18).(Registry values: P1, N2998)
