    1889-CC Morgan Dollar, MS63
    Elusive Prooflike Example

1889-CC $1 MS63 Prooflike NGC. The Carson City Mint was reactivated (after a three-year hiatus) in July of 1889. Unfortunately, the facility required extensive repairs to the physical plant and new personnel needed to be hired. As a result, the Mint did not commence coinage operations until October 10. In the short period remaining before the end of the year, only 350,000 Morgan dollars were produced and relatively few have survived with prooflike surfaces.

This impressive Select specimen exhibits sharply detailed, frosty design elements and lightly marked surfaces that include reflective prooflike fields. A few subtle hints of mauve and lavender patina are visible at selected angles. This piece is an attractive example of the most elusive Morgan dollar from the Carson City Mint. Census: 40 in 63 Prooflike, 8 finer (2/20).(Registry values: P9, N4719) (NGC ID# 2559, PCGS# 7191)
