    1893-S Morgan Dollar, AU50
    Premier Series Condition Rarity

1893-S $1 AU50 PCGS. Much has been written about the 1893-S Morgan dollar, often highlighting its low mintage of 100,000 pieces and its popularity as the biggest key date in the series. In U.S. numismatics, many low-mintage issues in various series are relatively plentiful despite the typical heraldry of contextual rarity, and, similarly, many series keys are readily available despite being the object of greatest desire within a type. The 1893-S dollar is not immune to these things -- despite its low-for-the-series mintage and key date status, circulated pieces, particularly those in low grades, are readily available. What truly sets the 1893-S apart from every other issue in the Morgan dollar series is its inherent conditional rarity in Mint State. In terms of Mint State rarity, the 1893-S is not only in a class by itself among Morgan dollars, it is a significant rarity in this condition in the absolute sense. This leads most Morgan dollar collectors to acquire attractive AU pieces, such as the present coin.

This example displays light wear consistent with the AU50 grade, while maintaining elements of satiny luster in the fields. Each side has bright silver color and scattered small abrasions, as is typical of AU-level San Francisco Morgans.(Registry values: P10, N4719)
