    1895 Morgan Dollar, PR58
    Proof-Only Key

1895 $1 PR58 PCGS. For many years numismatists believed 12,000 business-strike Morgan dollars were struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1895, but no example has ever appeared anywhere in a collection or public offering. Today, it is accepted that only 880 proof dollars were actually struck that year and the citation about the regular-issue coins in the Mint records must be some kind of clerical error. Naturally, this makes the 1895 the most sought-after proof issue of the series. Examples in all grades and conditions are prized by numismatists, as the Morgan dollar series is one of the most heavily collected disciplines in American numismatics and the supply of proofs is totally inadequate to satisfy collector demand.

This PR58 example exhibits sharply detailed design elements, with just a touch of wear on the high points. The fields are brightly reflective and the surfaces are lightly abraded, with a few subtle hints of pale gold toning. This coin will be a welcome addition to a fine gathering of Morgan dollars.(Registry values: N1)
