    1895 Morgan Dollar, PR66
    Stark, Undesignated Cameo Contrast
    Old Green Label Holder

1895 $1 PR66 PCGS. The 1895 proof has long been regarded as the king of Morgan dollars. It is not any more rare in the absolute sense than most other proof Morgans, but collector demand for this issue is exponentially greater due to the fact that no circulation strikes are known for the date. The 1895 is essential for a complete proof set of Morgan dollars as well as a complete date and mintmark set -- both of which are widely popular collecting avenues for the series.

Mint records record a production 12,000 circulation-strike dollars in 1895 at Philadelphia. This entry has long been considered an accounting error, referring to dollars of a different date. The Chapman brothers, for example, believed that no circulation strikes were coined. The 1895 proof, as early as 1896, had a reputation for rarity, with proof sets of this date garnering a premium at auction solely on the influence of the dollar.

Another school of thought about circulation-strike 1895 dollars is that 12,000 pieces were indeed struck but were never distributed to the public, likely being melted down at the Mint decades later under the dictates of the Pittman Act of 1918. Both theories regarding circulation strikes of this date reach the same conclusion: the 1895 Morgan dollar is only known in proof format today.

This Premium Gem example stands apart from most other 1895 proofs not only for its remarkable condition, but also for its cameo contrast and residency in an old green label PCGS holder. The old slab insert makes no mention of cameo contrast, although this PR66 coin is indeed a Cameo on both sides. Light golden toning warms the frosty devices and mirrored fields, and close study of the surfaces fails to reveal a single contact mark. This coin excels among high-end 1895 proof Morgans and presents remarkable eye appeal and quality. It will undoubtedly be the hallmark of a high-end Morgan dollar collection when it changes hands on the auction block.
