Description

Sumatra. Dutch Colony copper Pattern "Basket" Duit Token ND (1836) AU58 Brown NGC, KM-Pn21, Scholten-664 (RR). A desirable and elusive duit pattern, notably scarcer than the popular "Swan" duit. Scholten suggests that such patterns may have been produced to ascertain the exact cost of minting duits, or otherwise may have been struck by several firms who solicited the right to supply the planchets for duits in the Indies. This piece is on the verge of Mint-State, a satisfying preservation to say the least.
