    Description

Potentially Unique Lion Daalder of 7 Shahis

Dutch East Indies Trade Lion Daalder of 7 Shahis 1634 XF40 NGC, 26.67g, 39mm, KM-Unl., Dav-Unl., Delm-Unl., Scholten-Unl. Utterly astonishing and captivating for its historicity. Much as was the case with the silver "hairpin"-style larins produced by the Ottomans at the mint of Basra after the conquest of the city in 1546 (AH 953; see later lots in this sale), this incredible piece was produced explicitly and singularly for the purpose of trade with the Safavid Persia, first inaugurated between the Dutch and the Persians under the reign of Shah Abbas I (1587-1629); clearly replacing the usual provincial name with the word "ORIENT" and an added stamp to the die expressing the denomination in familiar units. Sevket Parmuk, the distinguished Ottoman monetary historian, has remarked that during this period of the 17th century, numerous European coinages were minted with legends deliberately delineating their intended spheres of circulation, as such pieces were cleverly struck of ever-decreasing purities of silver meant to generate an ever-increasing profit in the Levantine and Middle Eastern trade (see the Luiginos and Timmins in this sale for further examples). While another sample of this extraordinarily rare coinage was sold by Ponterio & Associates for an impressive $5,500 (Sale #152, 8 January 2010, Lot 8042), dated 1610, what makes the present piece all the more intriguing is that, whereas the Ponterio example was denominated to 6 Shahis, the current coin clearly bears the stamp "7 Shahi" impressed around 6 o'clock on the obverse. When coupled with the date, which also differs from the Ponterio piece--which when it was sold was described as one of 3 known--it certainly presents the likelihood that this coin may be unique as type. On a technical level, while the dies appear quite disintegrated towards the centers, with a die crack running through the lion shield, the fields are filled to the brink with die polish lines, the style of the lettering quite peculiar, and the whole coin toned to a soft graphite in hue. Without a doubt a once-in-a-lifetime type of opportunity.
