A Near-Gem Survivor of the Final Rijksdaalder from Louis Napoleon's Reign
Kingdom of Holland. Louis Napoleon Rijksdaalder 1809 MS64
PCGS, Utrecht mint, KM36, Dav-231, Schulman-135 (RR). The final
rijksdaalder issue of Louis Napoleon's reign as King of Holland,
even though it was only second type produced after Napoleon's
dissolution of the Batavian Republic in 1806. Clearly looking more
towards the development of the Netherlands as a client state of
France rather than as a successor to Batavia, as the previous issue
featuring the Dutch knight had done, it was a dream that was never
meant to be for the Emperor's brother, he being forced to abdicate
not long after the failed British Walcheren Campaign of 1809 and
the installation of Bernadotte as commander of the Dutch troops.
While this emission was struck in notably specimen finish, and
hence often survives in beautiful quality, it rarely matches the
preservation seen here. Frost and die polish coat Louis's bust,
luster haloing medallic details while not a planchet flaw appears
over the surfaces. Notable as a type missing from the Millennia
Collection, and presently bested by a single piece a point finer at
