Description

Synod of Dordt silver medal 1619, 58mm diameter, plain (rounded) edge, XF with elegant medium gray surfaces, a massive and intricately engraved, and well struck, specimen by W. van Bijlaer, offering a panoramic view of the long chamber at Dordrecht, with the council assembled within the hallowed Hall. The scene looks almost exactly like that shown on TV these days, inside the British Parliament, and is a splendid example of Renaissance "perspective." Dated 1619 in split fashion at lower bottom inside the inner circle, where the delegates are shown "discussing" matters in their period dress. Reverse shows pilgrims attempting to ascend a hill towards Heaven, the temple of Jehovah atop, with radiate Hebrew letters above. Five British delegates attended the synod convocation, making this piece of interest to British collectors as well. Fairly rare, as one specimen was given to each participant. Ex Baldwin sale 55, May 2008, Lot 2600.
