Choice 1759-Dated Martha Washington 'Nickel', Judd-2182
"1759" Martha Washington "Five Cent" Test Token, Judd-2182, R.7, MS64 NGC. 5.0 gm. Unlike other U.S. coin denominations, the alloy for the five cent piece or nickel has remained the same since it was first issued in 1866, except for the World War II alloy of copper, silver, and manganese. Martha Washington dies of five cent size were apparently made to test presses instead of compositions. The dies were likely made before 1999, because the design for the "golden" dollar dies exhibit minor differences, such as missing designer initials below the shoulder. This a satiny near-Gem that has light golden toning and a sharp strike. Minute carbon and contact are present but of little import.Auction Info
