Description

Impressive 1965 Martha Washington
"Quarter," Judd-2116, MS63

"1759" Martha Washington "Quarter," Judd-2116, Pollock-2082, Low R.7, MS63 NGC. The obverse has a bust of Martha Washington with the date 1759, while the reverse shows Mount Vernon. The Mint calls these "nonsense dies" because they lack reference to the current date and the denomination. This piece is struck from multilayered cupronickel-copper in order to test the composition for the clad coins of 1965. The Martha Washington design would later be used to test several other issues. A number of circular lines (as made) are seen on both sides, and faint clash marks are visible on the reverse. Eye-catching luster is unaffected by several minuscule handling marks.
