(1836) Gobrecht Dollar Splasher
J-A1836-4, The Only Example Obtainable
(1836) $1 Gobrecht Dollar Splasher, Judd-A1836-4, Pollock-3025,
R.8 -- Repaired -- PCGS Genuine. A uniface obverse die trial of
an early version of the 1836 Gobrecht dollar. Minor design
variations can be seen, but the most noticeable to us is the eye of
Liberty, seen here as a diagonal slash more than an actual
representation of an eye. The background has faint grid lines that
were an aid to Gobrecht in aligning the design. Struck in white
metal. Only two examples are known. The other piece was formerly in
Dr. Korein's collection and is now in the ANS, making this the only
available example.This important Gobrecht splasher comes with the PCGS Genuine insert that states "Repaired." This refers to the fragile nature of each of the known splashers. They are each held together by paper backing that is glued to the back of the piece. Much brightness remains on the white metal surfaces with the expected small flecks of carbon scattered about.
