    circa-1838 Brass Hub Reduction of
    Judd-80 Eagle Device, MS62

(1838) Brass Hub Reduction of Judd-80 Eagle Motif, MS62 NGC. 44.8 gm. 38 mm x 39 mm. Uniface on a thick planchet, in an alloy of 64% copper, 35% zinc. The eagle, arrows, and olive branch motif from the reverse of Judd-80 appears, sans lettering, within an inner diameter of 30 mm. and an outer diameter of 31 mm. Unlisted in Pollock or the 10th Edition of Judd. The satiny surfaces display walnut-brown and gunmetal-gray toning. Well struck with ideal centering and minimal marks. The Judd-80 pattern is a restrike without known originals, which makes the year of manufacture for the present piece subject to debate. The Smithsonian Collection has a similar piece, "produced via a [Mint] reducing lathe on a brass disk ... not struck from a die" per A copper hub trial of the eagle motif also rests in the Smithsonian (Pollock-3058).
