Description

(1851) Unperforated Cent in Nickel
Judd-131a Restrike, PR67
Finest Known, Ex: Kosoff, Simpson

(1851) P1C One Cent, Judd-131a Restrike, Pollock-156, R.7, PR67 PCGS. Ex: Simpson. 44.8 grains, per its Kosoff catalog appearance. This simple undated pattern features the legends CENT / ONE TENTH SILVER on the obverse, while UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and a small wreath decorate the reverse. Struck in nickel alloy (75% copper, 25% nickel) with a reeded edge. Judd-131a is known only as unperforated restrikes. Original strikings (Judd-127) from these dies were perforated and in billon alloy, part of an attempt to reduce the diameter of the then-current large cent. Saul Teichman's Judd-131a roster lists nine specimens. This Superb Gem retains almost all of its initial nickel-gray brightness with light striations evident in the fields on each side. The finest example certified (1/25).
