Rare Undated Uniface Cent Pattern From 1853, Judd-151c
(1853) P1C Cent, Judd-151c, Pollock-179, R.7, PR65 PCGS. Cent patterns were struck in 1853 in an effort to replace the cumbersome 'large' cents then in circulation. On the Judd 149-151 pieces the obverse is adapted from quarter eagle dies while the reverse has ONE CENT inside a laurel wreath. The Judd 151b, c, and d pieces are struck from an unfinished obverse die with dentils around the border, but no lettering or motifs. The reverse is the same as on the Judd 149-151 patterns. The Judd-151 pieces were struck in a 40% nickel, 60% copper composition with a plain edge. Fewer than half a dozen pieces are believed known of this seldom-seen pattern. The copper-nickel composition is still light in color with one reddish streak across the center of the obverse and two streaks across the reverse, undoubtedly from improper mixture of the alloy.
