Description

    Undated (1856) Flying Eagle
    Pattern Cent, Judd-179, PR65 Brown

(1856) P1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-179, Pollock-207, Low R.7, PR65 Brown PCGS. CAC. Snow-1858 PT1b. Similar to the regular issue Flying Eagle cent, except that the obverse legends (UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the date) are absent. Although no date is present, this pattern has been traditionally assigned with the 1856 varieties. Rick Snow believes that Judd-179 was struck in 1858, as part of an extensive series of pattern issues produced that year. The reverse die, however, was used on several 1856 cent die marriages, including S-5, S-6, S-7, and (especially) S-9. It is identified by a tiny die scratch on the left ribbon end. Struck in copper with a plain edge. The brown surfaces show occasional dabs of charcoal over each side. The strike is irregular with full definition on the reverse but some softness on the tail feathers on the obverse.
Ex: Summer FUN Signature (Heritage, 7/2012), lot 4619, which brought $34,500. (PCGS# 11783)
