    Description

    (1999) Martha Washington Dollar-Size Medal
    Judd-2185, Copper-Zinc Alloy, MS67

(1999) $1 Martha Washington Dollar, Judd-2185, Pollock-Unlisted, Low R.7, MS67 NGC. This 1759-dated medal was struck with dies prepared in 1965 for the purpose of testing different coinage alloys. The Judd-2185 piece, with a plain edge, was produced in 1999 in an alloy of 71% copper, 25% zinc, 2% nickel, and 1% manganese, likely a test composition for the Sacagawea dollars that debuted the following year with a similar alloy. As a result, the piece is roughly the same size and color as the later regular issue dollars. Listed in the Judd book as Low R.7, but it is described as a medal and not technically a pattern. The piece is virtually perfect in strike and preservation.
