    Description

1792 Half Disme--The First Coin of the United States

1792 H10C Half Disme, Judd-7, Pollock-7, R.3, XF45 PCGS. Formerly offered as lot 997 in the Harold Blauvelt Collection, where it was described in part as, "Considered by many to be a rightful part of the regular series of United States silver coins, and therefore the first issue of the new nation, this queerly attractive coin was designed by Robert Birch and struck under the auspices of the mint, though the mint buildings were not yet operational. Struck July 13, 1792, on a planchet the silver for which was reputedly furnished by President Washington. Reputedly, too, Liberty is modeled after Martha Washington."
The coin has light to medium gray patina over both sides and the ubiquitous planchet flaws normally seen on this issue are limited to a lamination on the lower left portion of the reverse. A couple of scratches are also located on the lower portion of the reverse.
Ex: Harold Blauvelt Collection (Bowers and Merena, 2/77), lot 997.
From the Collection of Dr. Joseph M. Seventko.
