    Description

1805 Fantasy Half Eagle in Copper
    Judd-37, MS65 Brown
    Only Two Pieces Known

1805 $5 Half Eagle, Judd-37, Pollock-6115, R.8, MS65 Brown NGC. This private striking pairs two dies sold by the Mint as scrap in the early 1860s. The obverse die is broken and both sides show heavy die rust. Struck in copper with a plain edge. Examples were struck in silver, copper, white metal, and there is a uniface obverse splasher known in white metal. Saul Teichman speculates (probably correctly) that these pieces were most likely struck by either Joseph Mickley or Montroville Dickeson. Each side of this piece has a significant presence of gray-blue toning with only a slight glimmer of reflectivity in the fields.
Ex: Matt Rothert Sale (Bowers and Ruddy, 11/1973), lot 1267; George Hatie Collection (Bowers and Merena, 8/1983), lot 1636.
