    Description

    1836 Two Cent in Billon
    Judd-52, PR64

1836 P2C Two Cents, Judd-52, Pollock-55, Low R.6, PR64 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Simpson. An early, small diameter two cent pattern with a spread-winged eagle on the obverse and date below. The reverse features TWO CENTS in the center, surrounded by a laurel wreath. Struck in billon (90% copper, 10% silver) with a plain edge. These pieces show an interesting die punching error with the A in STATES punched over an erroneous E. Restrikes were most likely made in the late 1850s and later, and show a shattered obverse die. About two dozen pieces are known of this early pattern, according to USPatterns.com. This is an exceptionally attractive example. The reflective surfaces display streaks of gray across each side, and the underlying color is lilac-rose-yellow. Fully struck.
