Innovative 1836 Two Cent Pattern in Billon
Judd-52, PR65
1836 P2C Two Cents, Judd-52, Pollock-55, Low R.6, PR65 NGC.
Design. Obverse: A small eagle with outstretched wings standing on a cloud, with the peripheral legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and 1836 below. Reverse: The denomination TWO CENTS surrounded by a laurel wreath. Struck in billon (90% copper, 10% silver) with a plain edge.
Commentary. The two cent denomination was proposed as part of the Act of January 13, 1837. Unfortunately, the portion of the bill dealing with the two cent coin was deleted before the bill was passed. The two cent coin became a reality only in 1864.
Physical Description. A well-preserved specimen, with a sharp strike and wisps of gray toning. An attractive example of this early pattern. NGC Census: 2 in PR65, none finer. PCGS Population: 1 in PR65, none finer (12/08).
Provenance. Stack's private treaty transaction (10/1991).
