Description

1836 Two Cent Piece, MS63
Judd-53 Original
Rare in All Grades

1836 P2C Two Cents, Judd-53 Original, Pollock-54, Low R.6, MS63 NGC. 59.1 grains. An early, small diameter two cent pattern with a spread-winged eagle on the obverse and date below. The reverse features TWO CENTS in the center, surrounded by a laurel wreath. Struck in billon (90% copper, 10% silver) with a reeded edge. According to research by Alan Meghrig, all original strikings of this two cent pattern show a coin turn die alignment, as seen on the present piece, with a reeded edge and business-strike surfaces. Proof strikings with medal turn alignment are later restrikes. NGC and PCGS combined report only 12 submissions of Judd-53 in MS holders, which may include a few duplications (1/24).

This Select example displays deep ebony-brown patina with minor marks as allowed by the grade. The strike is sharp on the eagle's breast feathers, and the overall eye appeal is excellent for the issue. This is the first Original Judd-53 example we have handled since 2018, when a comparable MS63 NGC coin in our April Central States Signature realized $28,800. A rare and important opportunity for the advanced collector.
