1836 Two Cent Pattern in Billon
    Judd-53, Deeply Toned MS63

1836 P2C Two Cents, Judd-53, Pollock-54, Low R.6 MS63 NGC. An early, small diameter two cent pattern with a spread-winged eagle on the obverse and date below. The reverse features TWO CENTS in the center, surrounded by a laurel wreath. Struck in billon (90% copper, 10% silver) with a reeded edge. The two cent denomination was proposed as part of the Act of January 13, 1837. However, the portion of the bill dealing with the two cent coin was deleted before the bill was passed. The two cent piece became a reality only in 1864. An estimated two dozen or so examples are known. Deep, even gray-blue patina covers each side.
