    1836 Two Cent in Billon
    Judd-53, VF35
    An Unquestioned Original Strike

1836 P2C Two Cents, Judd-53, Pollock-54, Low R.6, VF35 PCGS. CAC. An early, small diameter two cent pattern with a spread-winged eagle on the obverse and date below. The reverse features TWO CENTS in the center, surrounded by a laurel wreath. Struck in billon (90% copper, 10% silver) with a reeded edge. Alan Meghrig is a life-long numismatic researcher with special emphasis on the two cent series. He has also included these (Judd-53) patterns in his examination of the two cent series. What Alan found was there are Originals and Restrikes, and the difference between them is relatively easy to differentiate. Originals have a reeded edge and a coin turn, and were struck in business-strike format. Restrikes always have a plain edge and a medal turn; these were always struck in proof format. Only one exception has been found, the Eliasberg Judd-54 was a proof with a medal turn, but the edge was reeded. However, the reeding had been applied after striking. This example fits the criteria set out by Alan's 11-page monograph addressing the Original and Restrike status of these pieces. There is no evidence of reflectivity in the fields, the edge is reeded, and this pattern has a coin turn. Thus, it is an unquestioned Original. The surfaces are deep, chocolate-brown with even wear over each side.
