Description

1836 Two Cents in Copper, Silverplated
Judd-54a, PR63

1836 P2C Two Cents, Judd-54a, Pollock-55a, PR63 PCGS. Pattern 1836 two cent piece with a spread-winged eagle on the obverse and the date below. The reverse has TWO CENTS in the center and is surrounded by a laurel wreath. Struck in copper with a plain edge and silverplated. This is the Judd-54 pattern, but PCGS assigns the "a" suffix to segregate silverplated pieces from their non-plated counterparts. According to USPatterns.com, about two dozen Judd-54 examples are known overall.

This piece lacks the obverse die cracks associated with the late-period restrikes, suggesting potentially the 1836 striking period, or at least an early restrike. The mirror-bright copper-red edge differs in appearance from the matte-like silver-plated luster of the faces. The luster is what would be expected for a plated piece, as USPatterns.com states: "According to Judd, some of these were silver plated of pickled (dipped in acid to remove the more reactive copper, leaving the surface enriched in silver)." The present piece is sharply struck and displays few marks.
