1836 Liberty Cap Gold Dollar in Gold
    Judd-67 Original, PR66+ Cameo

1836 PG$1 Gold Dollar, Judd-67 Original, Pollock-70, R.5, PR66+ Cameo PCGS. The design was engraved by Christian Gobrecht and the obverse was Mexican influenced with a Liberty cap surrounded by rays of glory. The reverse features the denomination 1 D. within a coiled palm frond, with the date below and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above. Struck in gold with a 10% copper alloy with a plain edge. Coin alignment. This design was also struck at a later date, and in other metals. The restrikes are believed to be in medallic alignment. One was overstruck on an 1859 gold dollar, which would definitively date restrikes to 1859 at the earliest. The originals were struck by March 14, 1836, according to Walter Breen. This is the first gold pattern, and is highly collectible as such. The surfaces display rich reddish-gold color and the fields show remarkable depth of reflectivity, which is set against the frosted devices. Exceptional quality along with historical and numismatic significance.
