    Description

    Exquisite PR64 1836 Judd-67
    Gold Dollar Pattern

1836 PG$1 Gold Dollar, Judd-67, Pollock-70, R.5, PR64 NGC. The obverse features a Liberty cap surrounded by rays of glory, similar in design to certain contemporary Mexican issues. The reverse features the denomination 1 D. within a coiled palm frond, with the date below and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above. Christian Gobrecht is credited with both designs. Struck in gold with a plain edge. Along with his magnificent silver Flying Eagle dollar patterns, the cap-and-rays gold dollar pattern represents some of Gobrecht's most-heralded work. Offered here is a beautiful Choice proof with gleaming mirrors in pale lemon-gold. Only a few tiny planchet flaws and contact marks on the reverse preclude an even finer designation. Census: 8 in 64, 5 finer (8/09). (NGC ID# 26VC, PCGS# 11260)
