    Description

    Glittering 1836 Pattern Gold Dollar
    Struck in Gold
    Judd-67, PR65 Cameo

    1836 PG$1 Gold Dollar, Judd-67, Pollock-70, R.5, PR65 Cameo NGC.
    Design.
The obverse features a Liberty cap surrounded by rays of glory, similar in design to certain contemporary Mexican issues. The reverse features the denomination 1 D. within a coiled palm frond, with the date below and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above. Christian Gobrecht is credited with both designs. Struck in gold with a plain edge.

    Commentary.
Judd-67 is the first gold dollar pattern struck in anticipation of a future coinage. It is also one of the few gold patterns, actually struck in gold, that can be obtained at a somewhat reasonable price. The cataloger for Stack's in 2003 noted the blundered reverse die, with the C in AMERICA first punched horizontally, with its opening toward the border, and then corrected. The observation provides clear evidence that the dies (or a hub) were created through the use of individual letter punches.

Both originals and restrikes exist for Judd-67, with at least one overstruck example known on an 1859 gold dollar as its host. That piece is clearly visible at USPatterns.com.

    Physical Description.
This remarkable Gem has exquisite yellow-gold surfaces with fully mirrored fields of moderate depth, around lovely devices that exhibit excellent luster. A few faint hairlines and tiny contact marks are consistent with the grade. NGC Census: 3 in PR65 Cameo, 6 with finer numerical grades (all designations). PCGS Population: 3 in PR65, 3 finer, none with a cameo designation (12/08).

    Provenance.
    The Randolph S. Rothschild Collection (Stack's, 10/2003), lot 1112.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
