1836 'Cap and Rays' Gold Dollar Pattern
    Judd-67, PR65 Deep Cameo
One of the Few Gold Patterns Available

1836 PG$1 Gold Dollar, Judd-67, Pollock-70, R.5, PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS. The obverse is modeled after the Cap and Rays design seen on contemporary Mexican coins. The reverse has a beautifully engraved palm frond encircling the inner denomination 1/D., outside the palm frond is UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Struck in gold with a plain edge. This is the first gold pattern struck, and it is one of the very few gold patterns available to the average (or not-so-average) collector. This piece has a regular coin alignment, rather than medallic alignment. Medallic alignment would indicate a gold/silver alloy and warrant metallurgical testing as a Judd-68. This is a truly spectacular piece. The fields are deeply mirrored with starkly contrasting frosted devices. There are no noticeable or mentionable contact marks on either side.
