Description

Important Gem 1836 Gobrecht Gold Dollar, Judd-67

1836 PG$1 Gold Dollar, Judd-67, Pollock-70, R.5, PR65 PCGS. The obverse features a Liberty cap surrounded by numerous glory rays, similar in design to certain contemporary Mexican issues. The reverse features the denomination "1 D." within a coiled palm frond, with the date below and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above. Christian Gobrecht is credited with both designs. Struck in gold alloy with a plain edge. Judd-67 has considerable historical importance, as it is the first Federal gold pattern as well as the first Gold Dollar issue. Originals are likely quite rare, although a number were restruck in the 1860s, one of which was struck over an 1859 Gold Dollar. This bright yellow-gold Gem has a needle-sharp strike and highly reflective fields, while the reverse has bold mint-made striations. (#11260) (NGC ID# 26VC, PCGS# 11260)
