Description

1836 Unfinished Half Dollar Die Trial, MS64, J-A1836-1
The Finest of Two Pieces Known

1836 Unfinished Half Dollar Die Trial, Judd-A1836-1, Pollock-3019, R.8 MS64 PCGS. The obverse of the 1836 Reeded Edge half (Judd-57) is unfinished, lacking the inscription of LIBERTY on the cap. The planchet is octagonal with wide margins around the design. Struck in lead or white metal. Only two examples are known, this one and the piece in the Smithsonian. Obviously struck on a thin layer of metal, the piece was mounted on a piece of paper for reinforcement and a few words are occasionally evident. This is a splendid example and much finer than the piece in the Smithsonian, which shows a number of scratches and other surface defects. This piece has two minor bends at the rim, at 12 o'clock and 6:30. Otherwise, there are no mentionable defects, just a few tiny flecks that serve as ready identifiers. The design elements are fully struck, of course, and the surface has light gray-lilac patina. An exceptional opportunity for the advanced collector, especially a collector of Reeded Edge halves, to obtain a unique collateral piece for his or her collection.
