    Marvelous 1838 Half Dollar Pattern
    Judd-72, PR66 Cameo

    1838 P50C Half Dollar, Judd-72, Pollock-75, R.5, PR66 Cameo NGC.
    Design.
Obverse: Bust of Liberty facing left, stars 7x6, 1838 below. Reverse: An eagle with spread wings holding an olive branch and four arrows. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above and denomination HALF DOLLAR below. Medallic alignment. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.

    Commentary.
This issue was struck in both original and restrike formats. The originals weigh approximately 206 grains, conforming to the weight standard for half dollars before February 21,1853. The restrikes weigh approximately 192 grains, the standard weight after the reduction of 1853. The restrike issues are further divided into early and late period restrikes. Early restrikes were struck circa 1858 and the dies show little or no rust. Later restrikes, struck circa 1870, show extensive die rust and flat central detail. The present coin weighs 192 grains and shows virtually no rust spots, making it an early restrike example. An interesting and historically significant specimen, created in the days of Mint Director James Ross Snowden's liberal restrike program.

    Physical Description.
The strike is strong at the periphery, but a little softness shows in the hair and eagle's breast. The surfaces are undisturbed and reflective, with light golden toning over each side. Vivid contrast is evident on both sides, resulting in the coveted Cameo designation. NGC Census: 2 in PR66 Cameo, with the only finer piece a PR67 Cameo. PCGS Population: 3 in PR66, none finer (12/08).

    Provenance.
    Ex: Auction '81 (Rarcoa, 7/1981), lot 309.
