1838 Half Dollar Pattern, PR64
Judd-73, Probable Restrike
1838 P50C Half Dollar, Judd-73, Pollock-77, R.5 PR64 NGC.
The central figure of the obverse die is a bust of Liberty facing
left, wearing a diadem, with a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY. Thirteen
stars at the periphery are arranged seven left and six right, with
1838 below. The reverse features an eagle flying left, with the
legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above and the denomination HALF
DOLLAR below. Struck in silver with a medal turn and a reeded edge.
From a design by William Kneass, Judd-73 is found in both original
and restrike formats. The extensive die cracks on the reverse would
seem to indicate the present example is a restrike, but this
evidence is inconclusive, as no examples are known from perfect
dies.The present coin is an attractive example of this scarce and popular pattern. The strike is strong at the periphery, with excellent detail on the star centers, but there is a little softness on the hair and eagle's breast, as usually seen on this issue. Fetchingly toned in shades of green and brown, with the color deepest at the borders. Overall eye appeal is strong. An exceptionally pleasing specimen for the dedicated pattern specialist.
