1838 Pattern Half Dollar, Judd-73, PR64
An Apparent Early Restrike
1838 P50C Half Dollar, Judd-73, Pollock-77, R.5, PR64 NGC.
The obverse, once attributed to Chief Engraver William Kneass, is
more likely the work of assistant Christian Gobrecht. It depicts a
large draped bust of Liberty facing left. A level flying eagle
faces left, dominating the reverse. This apparent restrike has
three die cracks on the reverse. This most likely places it as one
of the earlier restrikes, as later restrikes show as many as five
cracks and die rust (not apparent here). The hairlined surfaces are
mostly brilliant with light russet toning around the margins.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 296N, PCGS# 11285, GSID# 12009)
