Restrike Judd-73 1838 Half Dollar, PR61
1838 P50C Half Dollar, Judd-73 Restrike, Pollock-77, R.5, PR61 PCGS. On the obverse a bust of Liberty faces left with seven stars to the left and six to the right. Liberty wears a diadem and a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY. The date is below the bust. On the reverse an eagle flies in a plain field with the statutory legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around, and the denomination HALF DOLLAR below. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. The surfaces show some post-striking impairments: A crisscross X runs through the obverse centering dot, along with a pinscratch below the eagle's neck. Other marks are mint-made: Two die lines at the front of the bust run to a denticle below star 1, as on the Judd-72 in this sale. The reverse shows numerous die cracks: 1. From A in HALF to eagle's tail feathers; 2. From between AR to join crack 1; 3. Branching from crack 2 left through LA; 4. Branching from crack 2 right through R, the button separator, the bases of RICA, rising through E and M; 5. Between AM through the wingtip and onto the right (facing) wing. All of these die cracks confirm the restrike status of this piece. The www.uspatterns.com web site says, "Restruck throughout the late 1850s to the mid 1870s--Originals should weigh 206 grains and restrikes 192 grains but there are also miscellaneous coins which are difficult to classify." Some curious die marks are also noted in the V between the right wing and the tail. Certified in a green-label holder.
