Description

1838 Half Dollar in Silver
Judd-73 Restrike, PR64

1838 P50C Half Dollar, Judd-73 Restrike, Pollock-77, R.5, PR64 PCGS. Liberty faces left and wears a diadem and a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY. 13 stars and the date fill the periphery. On the reverse, an eagle flies level in a plain field with the statutory legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around, and the denomination HALF DOLLAR below. The Liberty portrait is likely the work of Christian Gobrecht, since it resembles the bust on the Liberty eagle, also introduced in 1838. Struck in silver with a reeded edge and medallic die alignment. Possibly, all examples of Judd-73 are restrikes with bold peripheral and radial cracks on the reverse. If so, they are mules pairing the Judd-75 obverse with the Judd-79 and Judd-79a reverse. Butter-gold, autumn-brown, and sky-gray toning visits smooth, lightly reflective surfaces. The peripheral strike is sharp, while the high-relief centers show areas of incompleteness.
