    Description

    1838 Seated Liberty Half With Flying Eagle Reverse, Judd-81

    1838 P50C Seated Liberty Half Dollar, Judd-81 Restrike, Pollock-88, R.7, PR66 Brown NGC. The obverse is very similar to the regular issue Seated Liberty design, with minor differences in the shape of the rock, shield, and arrangement of Liberty's drapery. The reverse is the "defiant eagle" design, with the eagle flying to the left, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above, and the denomination HALF DOLLAR below. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Formerly offered as lot 1151 in the Bass I Sale, where it was described in part as, "Sharply struck with slight weakness at the centers...Deeply mirrored fields and light cameo devices are toned vivid blue and amber, with splashes of mint red at the borders and around various design elements."
    Bass I (Bowers and Merena, 5/99), lot 1151, where it realized $5,175; purchased by Harry Bass from Numismatics, Ltd., August 12, 1974.
