    Description

1838 'Curved Date' Half Dollar in Silver
    Judd-79, PR63
    Contemporary Original Strike

1838 P50C Seated Liberty Half Dollar, Judd-79, Pollock-89, High R.7, PR63 NGC. Ex: Bass/ANA Museum Display. The obverse displays the Seated Liberty design, close to the one adopted for circulation strikes, with the date slightly curved and the word LIBERTY raised on the shield. The reverse shows Gobrecht's Flying Eagle design, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on the upper rim and HALF DOLLAR at the lower margin. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. Medallic alignment. The surfaces on this Select proof show significant red and blue toning with brighter centers and good reflectivity in the fields, especially on the reverse.

Saul Teichman of USPatterns.com advises that the Raised LIBERTY obverse die (Curved Date/Obverse 2 in Judd), used on Judd-76b, Judd-79, Judd-82, and Judd-83, was used on original strikes only: "This die apparently did not survive into the 1850s-1870s timeframe, as no restrikes are known from it." The Incused LIBERTY die (Straight Date/Obverse 3 in Judd) as an original is known only on the Judd-79a. All other uses of the Incused LIBERTY die, Judd-76 through 78, Judd-80, and Judd-81, are restrikes, all believed struck in the mid-1860s to mid-1870s timeframe.
Ex: Auction '81 (RARCOA's session, 7/1981), lot 317; Harry W. Bass Research Foundation. Accompanied by the original auction flip. HBCC-6009 (Bass Sylloge number).
