    1838 Gobrecht-Designed Seated Liberty Half
    Judd-79a, PR64

1838 P50C Seated Liberty Half Dollar, Judd-79a, Pollock-86, Low R.7, PR64 PCGS. The obverse has the Seated Liberty design, close to that adopted for circulation strikes, with Judd's "straight date" and the word LIBERTY incused on the shield. The reverse shows Gobrecht's Flying Eagle design, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on the upper rim and HALF DOLLAR at the lower margin. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. The dozen or so pieces known are medallically aligned, and the one in the Smithsonian was double struck with a 20-degree rotation between strikes. This piece shows bright reflectivity in the fields and even reddish-golden toning over each side. A few light hairlines are all that prevent an even higher grade. (NGC ID# 296Z, PCGS# 11328)
