1838 Seated Half Pattern With Incuse LIBERTY
    Judd-79A, PR66

    1838 P50C Seated Liberty Half Dollar, Judd-79A, Pollock-86, Low R.7, PR66 NGC.
    Design.
206 grains. Medallic orientation. The obverse has the Seated Liberty design, close to that adopted for circulation strikes. This is Judd's "straight date," which has LIBERTY incused on the shield. The reverse shows Gobrecht's Flying Eagle design, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on the upper rim and HALF DOLLAR at the lower margin. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.

    Commentary.
According to USPatterns.com there are no restrikes of this issue, only originals, which were struck in 1838: "No light weight restrikes have ever been confirmed." One of about a dozen pieces known.

    Physical Description.
This example of Judd-79A is especially well preserved. The fields on each side are heavily striated, which imparts a profound flash on both obverse and reverse. The proof mirrors flash strongly through the rich orange-russet toning seen over each side. NGC Census: 3 in PR66, 1 finer. PCGS Population: 1 in PR66, none finer (12/08).

    Provenance.
    Ex: Auction '81 (RARCOA, 7/1981), lot 318.
