    Description

1840 Liberty Seated Dime Die Trial, J-A1840-2

1840 H10C J-A1840-2, P-3070, R.8. MS62 PCGS. Obverse of the regular Liberty Seated motif, with drapery, but see below. Struck in white metal. In Dave Bowers' revision of the Judd reference, he noted that this particular variety was unconfirmed and "believed to be a misdescription" of the similar Half Dime splasher. This Dime splasher can now be confirmed for future editions of the Judd reference. Tooling marks around the central motif were probably done at the time this piece was made, and not at a later date. It appears that there may have actually been drapery at Liberty's elbow, then tooled off the splasher for some reason. Deep pewter and gray-brown surface with considerable lighter gray luster.
