1849 Bouvet Ten Dollar in Copper
    Judd-C1849-1, PR63 Brown

1849 $10 Ten Dollar, Judd-C1849-1, Pollock-5075, High R.7, PR63 Brown NGC. The obverse features a head of Liberty facing left, with 13 stars around and the date below. Liberty wears a plain coronet inscribed LIBERTY. The signature BOUVET F. is below the bust. The reverse exhibits a standing eagle, with wings spread and a shield on the breast, with an olive branch in the right talon and three arrows in the left. A small wreath floats above the eagle's head, with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around and the denomination below. Struck in copper with a plain edge. The French Mint's signature CUIVRE was reportedly stamped on the edge, which is not visible in the NGC holder.

It is believed these coins were struck at the Paris Mint in 1849, when Bouvet was contacted by Mint Director Robert M. Patterson as a possible replacement for Chief Engraver James B. Longacre. Pollock notes restrikes may have been struck in the 1880s. Only three or four examples are known in copper, but one gold (or gold-plated) specimen is rumored to exist. The present piece is a sharply detailed Select proof specimen with lightly marked brown surfaces that show a few hints of original red at the peripheries.
