    Description

1849 Billon Small Cent Pattern, MS61 Brown
    Monumental Rarity, J-A1849-1
    Ex: Mickley, Cohen, Brand, Ford

1849 1C Cent, J-A1849-1, Pollock-3095, R.8, MS61 Brown ANACS. The obverse features a Roman numeral 'I' punched just left of center. The surfaces are otherwise smooth with high, upset rims. On the other side, the reverse impression of the obverse punch shows through. Struck in billon with a plain edge. Two parallel planchet flaws occur in the field left of the I. Both sides show minimal roughness and are richly toned. In his sale of the Mickley Collection, Woodward described this coin as "beautiful" and "one of the rarest pattern pieces." Indeed, this is one of the earliest experimental coins in the Mint's pursuit of a small cent. The idea was suggested by Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee Samuel Vinton and struck under Mint Director R.M. Patterson, who had this piece and several related trials forwarded to Vinton on January 18, 1849. With only two examples of J-A1849-1 known (the other was offered as lot 5707 in our 1998 FUN Signature sale), this is a monumental offering not only for pattern specialists, but all small cent collectors.
