    Description

1850 P1C One Cent, Judd-120 Restrike, Pollock-135, High R.7, PR64 NGC. An early attempt by the Mint to reduce the cumbersome size of the contemporary Large Cent was this annular pattern. One side bears the denomination and date, the other features USA above and ONE TENTH SILVER below. Struck in billon alloy (10% silver, 90% copper) with a plain edge. From the same dies as Judd-119, but the centers are not perforated. This rare pattern is believed to be a restrike; presumably the 'midnight minters' had little interest in perforating the planchets prior to their production. Pale gold and steel-blue patina graces this well preserved and boldly struck near-Gem. The present piece is currently the only example of Judd-120 certified by NGC. (#11514) (NGC ID# 2984, PCGS# 11514)
