Description

1850 Three Cent Pattern With Cap and Rays Design
    Judd-125, Evenly Worn XF40

1850 P3CS Three Cent, Judd-125 Restrike, Pollock-171, R.4, XF40 PCGS. CAC. Modeled after the Mexican Cap and Rays design, these patterns were struck only in silver in 1850, but in 1836 this same obverse was used on the gold dollar and struck in gold, silver, copper, and oroide. The surfaces on this piece are evenly worn with few contact marks, indicating it was carried for several years as a pocket piece. Each side has light, even gray color with charcoal accents surrounding the devices. A couple of near-vertical grease stains (as struck) are located in the center of the reverse. The insert states XF40, but we have no reason to doubt this is a circulated proof and should properly be designated as a PR40. (PCGS# 11538)
