    1851 Ring Cent in Copper
    Judd-129 Original, PR64 Brown

1851 P1C One Cent, Judd-129 Original, Pollock-153, Low R.7 PR64 Brown PCGS. This ring cent pattern shows an obverse with a wreath around the perforated center and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border. The reverse reads simply CENT/ ONE TENTH SILVER around a circle that surrounds the perforation. The patterns Judd-127 through Judd-131 were an early proposed solution to the problem of an oversized copper cent. A billon piece that contained one-tenth silver was suggested, and patterns were struck with and without perforated centers and in various alloys. Judd-129 was struck in copper with medal turn and has a central perforation, which classifies it as an original striking. About a dozen examples are known. This is a deeply toned piece that still retains small portions of mint red when closely examined.
