1852 Gold Dollar Pattern in Silver, Gem Proof
Judd-146, Restruck Over an 1860 Seated Dime

1852 PG$1 Gold Dollar, Judd-146, Pollock-174, R.8, PR65 PCGS. CAC. The obverse features a line design, described as a circle of six bows by early catalogers, around the central perforation. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around, with 1852 below. The reverse consists of the denomination DOLLAR above and an open wreath below. Struck on an annular silver planchet with a plain edge. These gold dollar patterns were left perforated in the center to permit a larger-diameter coin than would otherwise be possible. While Judd-146 is technically an R.7 issue, its actual availability deserves an R.8 rating, as no less than five examples of Judd-146 have been impounded in museum collections. This issue is less available today than it was circa 1890, before Byron Reed, J.C. Mitchelson, and B. Peyton donated their advanced collections to various institutions. Early pattern collectors were familiar with the issue, and R.C. Davis listed it as number 74 in his pioneering work on patterns. An early auction appearance of Judd-146 was in the R.C. Davis Collection (New York Coin & Stamp, 1/1890), lot 1032. In recent times, a search of auction records has uncovered only three appearances in the last 37 years. The devices are strongly impressed, with a high wire rim above the date on the inner perforation. The surfaces are pristine with light champagne toning. In this coin's appearance with Stack's, the catalogers described it as struck over an 1860 Seated dime. Portions of UNITED and S can be made out under DOLLAR, and the date 1860 can be perceived between D and at the left end of the wreath. There is no die break at the first L in DOLLAR.

The pieces that are privately held are:
    1. ANA (Stack's, 8/1976), lot 3627.
    2. ANA (New England Rare Coin Auctions, 7/1979), lot 1307.
    3. The Randolph S. Rothschild Collection (Stack's, 10/2003), lot 1114; Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two / FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2009 ), lot 1540, PR65 NGC, which brought $25,300; Forth Worth Signature (Heritage, 3/2010), lot 1933, PR65 PCGS, which realized $34,500. The present coin. (NGC ID# 299C, PCGS# 11608)
