    Description

1852 Gold Dollar Pattern in Copper
    Judd-147, PR64 Red and Brown

1852 PG$1 Gold Dollar, Judd-147, Pollock-175, Low R.7 PR64 Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. An annular pattern with a large central perforation, which would have allowed a larger-diameter gold dollar. The annular format limits the devices to a wreath and scrollwork. Gold dollars were vital to commerce in 1852, since silver coins were worth more than face value and did not circulate. Struck in copper with a plain edge, of which perhaps a dozen survive. Believed to have been struck after 1860. The die crack through the L in DOLLAR indicates the striking sequence and enables the dating of these pieces. A significant amount of red remains, intermixed with brown over the mellowed surfaces on each side.
