Description

    Distinctive 1852 'Ring' Gold Dollar
    Struck in Copper-Nickel
    Judd-148, PR65

    1852 PG$1 Gold Dollar, Judd-148, Pollock-176, Low R.7, PR65 NGC.
    Design.
The obverse features a line design, described as a circle of six bows by early catalogers, around the central perforation. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around, with 1852 below. The reverse consists of the denomination DOLLAR above, and an open wreath below. Struck on an annular copper-nickel planchet, with a plain edge.

    Commentary.
Judd-148 is from a more intricate design than the other pattern dollars of 1852. The annular design was an attempt to create a larger-diameter coin without increasing the amount of gold in each specimen. Unfortunately, problems ejecting the coins after striking made this innovation impractical.

    Physical Description.
A beautifully preserved example with a sharp strike and virtually no distractions. Bright overall with some light toning in shades of gray and brown, primarily on the reverse. NGC Census: 5 in PR65, none finer. PCGS Population: 3 in PR65, none finer (12/08).

    Provenance.
Ex: Yale University Sale (Stack's, 12/1971), lot 370.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two. (NGC ID# 299F, PCGS# 11614)
